Writerly Biography
Hi, my name is Marina Salazar, I am 19yrs old, and I was born and raised in Corpus Christi, Tx. I have been living in Elwood, Ks now for the past 8yrs, and graduated from Elwood High School back in May of 2010. I am also a member ot the Air National Guard (Air Force), and I go this summer to complete my training. Currently, I am going to Missouri Western to pursue a career in nursing. Reading and writing have always been one of my best strengths. Although I can improve on how I need to organize what I write about, and how to lengthen my essays. As a reader, I honestly don't really have a problem, I'm the type of person that can read a novel (ex. the Harry Potter series) within 1-2 days, and remember everything. Reading is something I enjoy doing during my free time as long as the book interests me. If it's material that I'm required to read it's a bit more difficult to keep myself focused and not let my mind wander to other things. Writing would be the subject that would intimidate me the most out of the 2. Especially if I have writer's block, I just feel like an absolute idiot when I can't think of anything to write. In order for reading or writing to excite me it has to be something that I have strong opinions about or makes me think outside the box.

HI Marina,
ReplyDeleteWelcome to 104! I'm happy that you have chosen to enroll in this class.
I'm surprised to hear that you moved from Corpus Christi, Texas to St. Joseph, Missouri. May I asked why you moved? What did you like about Texas?
I too enjoy the Harry Potter series. I've read each novel; although, sadly I cannot remember every detail like yourself :) Have you seen the latest movie? If so, what did you think of it?
You mention that you have strong opinions on subjects. What about the first written assignment? Do you think that this may be a challenge for you? If so, why?

Hi Ms. Chastain,
ReplyDeleteThank you for making me feel welcome in your class!
Yes moving from Corpus Christi, to Elwood, Ks/St. Joseph, Mo was definitely a drastic change. Especially if you consider the differences in climate. Before we moved it was just myself and my mom. Then in 2001 my mom got married to my stepdad, who is originally from the midwest. He then told my mom that he also wanted to move back to his hometown to be closer to his family. They gradually introduced the idea to me, (I didn't want to move at first) but eventually I warmed up to the idea and that's when we moved to the area in 2003.
The number one thing I loved about Texas was the ocean. It was always a peaceful place for me, to listen to the waves, and the seagulls above. The smell of the salty air, and the feel of the sand between my toes. In Texas, since it's such a big state, it's easy to find so many places to go. Just in South Texas alone there are so many different types of amusement parks, and huge outlets. Also the state has a rich history, winning it's independence from Mexico, then later joining the United States. Texas also has a diverse culture, primarily it's influenced by hispanic culture, but there are also a few places where asian communities (chinatowns).
As for the Harry Potter series, I've read each novel at least 5 times. For me it seems like every time I would read each novel again, I would always find out something new that I hadn't noticed the first (or second, etc.) time I read it. I believed that the latest movie was definitely a lot better than the last one. The 1st part of the 7th movie defintitely followed the book better.
The first written assignment has sparked my interest, we are trying to figure out who the intended audience is and how each person could or may view a certain advertisement. The challenge on this assignment may be on how I can make myself think about all the different opinions or controversies just one single ad can cause.
Hi Marina,
ReplyDeleteI apologize for the delay. I'm happy that the written assignment has sparked an interest. What about the second assignment. I will definitely be interested in what you decide to write about for the research paper. Feel free to explore something that you are interested in that is connected to one of the three texts.
I've never been to Texas; I'm certain it is very different than Missouri. I have lived here my entire life, so I haven't seen much culture as you might say. Although I do love to travel. I've visited NY, DC and Japan -- althought I went to Japan as a young girl, so there is not much that I can recall from that trip.
